Clancy Sigal, writing to thank me for the nod toward his fine 1962 novel Going Away, suggests that I might “want to reassess” my blog’s original subtitle (“On books, bookmen, and other rapidly aging notions”). Sigal doesn’t much like “that ‘rapidly aging’ tag. Sounds like an Obama-ism, giving up the ghost before the body is dead,” he says.
Good Lord! Sigal knows exactly how to provoke me into changing the blog’s subtitle. I hope it now more accurately, and less droningly, reflects the subject matter of A Commonplace Blog. I am principally interested, after all, in thinking about books by following where their thoughts go.
